The TITLE Tag
What is the purpose of the Title tag?
A title tells the user what the page is about.(Ok, we know, pretty obvious). Technically, the Title tag is not a Meta Tag. However, it is a very important tag to consider, which is why we talk about it here.
There are four very important places the Title will appear:
- A Search Engine may display the title as the link.
- The task bar.
- The header bar of the browser window, usually followed by the browser name.
- In the My Favorites folder. Take a look at your My Favorites folder and consider what page titles make sense and which do not.
Length
60 Characters may be all a user gets to see of your title. Some search engines limit the size of the title and truckate the rest of it. Why is that important to know? Site Announcegives a wonderful example (and it is well worth reading their whole article):
Here is a 60 character example:
The Greyhound Pets of America single handedly kill more dog
Here is what the title could have been:
The Greyhound Pets of America single handedly kill more dog kennel laws that endanger the - etc. etc. etc.
