The KEYWORD Tag

What is the purpose of the Keyword tag?

Anyone can write a web page on a particular subject, say horses. But if your web page is about a new "chiropractic treatment for horses" then you can improve your success rate for searches by using those keywords and that phrase.

Your target keywords should always be at least two or more words long. How do you choose them? Well, why is your page different than other pages? Tell me about it. No, don't write it, just say it out loud. THOSE are the keywords you should be considering. Now write it down.

According to Search Engine Watch your keywords should be less than 1,000 characters long. Plus, never place words in your keywords tag that are not in the visual text of the body of your web page. Remember, we are looking for a good rating from the Search Engine. Be sure and keep the keywords consistent to the material on the page, not the site.

Search Engine's send out spiders or bots to 'crawl' the web, going from link to link. The bot is not going to remember the last page in the site, only the current page.

What about the user? Will the user see it?

They will not see it unless they look at the source code. Wait! Do not think that it is not important, it is! Keywords (or phrases) are what a user puts into a search engine. This Meta tag informs the search bot/web crawler what the main points are of the document it is reviewing.

So, how are you doing? We have talked about Title tags and Keyword tags. This article is not meant as an in depth review of meta tags. It is only a brief outline to help you understand the importance of meta tags.
